Digital Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is an X-ray-based imaging technique that obtains moving images of parts of the body in real-time. It can be used to diagnose problems within the bones or joints, the muscles, or other areas of the body where evaluating movement is essential to an accurate diagnosis. It is also used to guide certain interventional radiology procedures, such as biopsies or pain management injections.

When preparing for a fluoroscopy

For most fluoroscopies, no special preparation is required, however, please wear loose, comfortable clothing with no metal. The following test also uses fluoroscopy and does require you to follow special preparation instructions prior to your test:

Arthrography

Arthrography is an examination of a joint (such as a shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, or ankle) using fluoroscopy and a contrast material (dye) typically performed in conjunction with an MRI or CT of the joint after injection of the contrast. It is generally performed on a joint when there is persistent and unexplained pain, and useful at identifying problems (such as tears) in the soft tissues of the joint (cartilage, ligaments, and tendons).

Special instructions:

  • Please inform us if you are allergic to iodine.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

An HSG is a test to evaluate the functions of the female reproductive systems, including the fallopian tubes and uterus. It can help determine if there is a blockage or other growth affecting a woman’s ability to become pregnant. HSG is an outpatient procedure that usually takes less than 5 minutes to perform.

Special instructions:

  • DAY OF EXAM: Your doctor may recommend an over-the-counter pain reliever an hour before the procedure, as well as an antibiotic.

If you are pregnant, please tell your doctor or a patient representative before your test.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fluoroscopies

Why are Fluoroscopies Important?

Fluoroscopy provides real-time imaging of internal structures, allowing doctors to observe movement and function in organs like the heart, lungs, and digestive system. This dynamic imaging helps diagnose conditions that may not be visible with standard X-rays.

At What Age Should I Get Scanned?

There isn’t a specific age at which everyone should get a fluoroscopy—it’s not a routine screening test like a mammogram. Instead, fluoroscopy is ordered when medically necessary, based on symptoms or conditions that require real-time imaging to evaluate movement within the body.

How Often Should I Get a Fluoroscopy?

The frequency of fluoroscopy scans varies widely based on individual health needs and the condition being monitored. It’s typically determined by healthcare providers based on the specific medical situation.

How Long Does the Test Take?

The duration of a fluoroscopy test can vary depending on the type of study being performed and the area of the body being examined. However, most fluoroscopy procedures typically take 15-60 minutes.
