In the fight against cancer, early and accurate detection of potential metastases – the spread of cancer from the original site to other parts of the body – is critical. One of the most powerful tools available to oncologists is Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography–Computed Tomography (FDG PET/CT). This advanced diagnostic imaging method combines metabolic imaging with anatomical detail, offering exceptional precision in identifying metastatic disease.

How FDG PET/CT Works

FDG PET-CT uses a radiotracer – fluorodeoxyglucose – a glucose (sugar) injection tagged with a small amount of radioactive material. Since cancer cells consume more sugar than normal cells, the radiotracer accumulates in the areas of high metabolic activity and communicates in the finalized report areas of cancer. The PET scan detects activity, while the CT scan (low dose, non-diagnostic) helps to reveal the specific regions of high metabolic activity. The combination provides a detailed view of the structure and function of tissues throughout the body.

Impact on Cancer Treatment Planning

Detection  and monitoring of metastases influences treatment plans and strategies, such as:

  1. Surgical decisions may vary, providing additional options and/or the possibility of avoiding necessary surgical procedures.
  2. Radiation and chemotherapy plans can be adjusted to better target affected areas, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients.
  3. Follow-up PET-CT imaging can be utilized during or after treatment to rule out disease progression and recurrence after treatment.

In many cases, FDG PET-CT findings prompt clinicians to tailor therapy more precisely, which can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life.
