Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography is a specialized form of X-RAY, resulting in cross-sectional computerized images and occasionally 3-Dimensional images of your head or body.
CT is most often used today to evaluate problems in the para-nasal sinuses, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It is also often used to assess bony problems in the spine or extremities, or for evaluation of certain types of hearing loss (conductive hearing loss). In addition CT is often used to facilitate a needle biopsy procedure.
CT has been revolutionized by the advent of spiral (or helical) CT. In contrast to conventional CT, which images a slice of the body, moves the patient, obtains another slice, etc., helical CT scans continuously as the patient travels through the CT gantry. This markedly decreases the time required to do a study. The entire chest and abdomen are scanned in less than a minute with elimination of motion artifact. The ability to present images in any plane (mulitplanar reconstruction) eliminates the need for multiple “runs” thus decreasing X-RAY exposure.

Additional Virtual Colonoscopy / Barium Enema / IVP Prep Instructions

- If you have questions about either kit, please request to speak with a CT Technologist.
Additional Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA) Prep Instructions
The day of your scan
- Be sure to follow instructions for pre-scan medication and arrival time at our Center.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal.
- Plan to be with us for approximately one hour.
What to expect
- Following registration, you will wait in a comfortable area.
- Baseline vital signs will be obtained and monitored through to the end of the examination.
- An IV will be started in your arm. This is necessary for the iodine contrast material that will be administered during the examination.
- Once the technologist has you appropriately positioned on the CT table, your examination will last approximately 20-30 minutes.
After the scan
- Your blood pressure and heart rate will be monitored. Provided your vital signs are stable, you will be discharged.
- Please do not plan any strenuous activities for the remainder of the day. You may return to work the following day.
- Please continue to take your usual medications unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
- Please hydrate with extra fluids throughout the day to allow your kidneys to naturally filter the iodine contrast material out of your body.
Result
- Following your scan, data will be processed.
- Our Cardiac Imaging Specialists will interpret the scan.
- A detailed report and images will be delivered to your doctor.
