Computed Tomography Imaging

San Diego CT

Computed Tomography is a specialized form of X-RAY, resulting in cross-sectional computerized images and occasionally 3-Dimensional images of your head or body.

CT is most often used today to evaluate problems in the para-nasal sinuses, chest, abdomen, and pelvis. It is also often used to assess bony problems in the spine or extremities, or for evaluation of certain types of hearing loss (conductive hearing loss). In addition CT is often used to facilitate a needle biopsy procedure.

CT has been revolutionized by the advent of spiral (or helical) CT. In contrast to conventional CT, which images a slice of the body, moves the patient, obtains another slice, etc., helical CT scans continuously as the patient travels through the CT gantry. This markedly decreases the time required to do a study. The entire chest and abdomen are scanned in less than a minute with elimination of motion artifact. The ability to present images in any plane (mulitplanar reconstruction) eliminates the need for multiple "runs" thus decreasing X-RAY exposure.
