Imaging Healthcare Specialists Earns ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center Designation

Imaging Healthcare Specialists has been designated a Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.

In order to receive this elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures in place for follow-up patient care, such as counseling and smoking cessation programs.

Lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography scans, and appropriate follow-up care, significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer – taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.

The ACR, founded in 1924, is one of the largest and most influential medical associations in the United States. The ACR devotes its resources to making imaging and radiation therapy safe, effective and accessible to those who need it. Its 36,000 members include radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians.

IHS Continues its Partnership with Project Access San Diego

Imaging Healthcare Specialists has partnered with a program called Project Access San Diego (PASD) since July 2009. Project Access (sponsored by the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation) coordinates a network of healthcare providers who donate medically necessary health care to those who qualify that are low-income, uninsured patients and are unable to afford the medical care they need.  Since the program was implemented in late 2008, PASD has had $7 million in donated healthcare services, has saved 20 lives, and has served 2,245 patients.

Imaging Healthcare Specialists proudly donates imaging services for up to ten patients a month, free of charge, through this program. Because of this partnership, the SDCMSF is recognizing the radiologists of Imaging Healthcare Specialists at their second annual Heroes de la Salud event on Thursday, September 26 as their Unsung Heroes. We are grateful for our partnership with Project Access and are pleased to continue the efforts on improving health care for the residents of San Diego County. IHS Listed as one of the Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities in the Nation

In the August 2011 edition of Health Imaging & IT, IHS was listed as one of the Top 25 Connected Healthcare Facilities. Here is what they wrote in the article:

Health Imaging & IT’s Top Connected class of 2011 is an illustrious group. Several previous winners have re-appeared and demonstrated their continued commitment to imaging connectivity across the enterprise, reporting ongoing gains in various metrics, such as turn-around time and operating costs. One common theme across our repeat winners? They are leveraging data to inform strategic decisions and monitor results.

It’s a business model to be replicated.

Reading between the lines, there are hints of positive developments. Yes, hospitals, health systems and radiology practices are squeezing every ounce of productivity and innovation from their investments in imaging modalities, informatics systems and staff. Compared with last year, volume is steadier, with most sites showing slight gains.

We considered Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) EMR adoption stages, according to the HIMSS Analytics EMR Adoption Model. Our winners are conglomerated at the top of the scale, with most reporting at stage 6 or 7. That means they fall in the top 4.5 percent of U.S. facilities.

Read on for short profiles of recent imaging connectivity projects at this year’s Top Connected organizations.

Imaging Healthcare Specialists:
The San Diego imaging center leverages a vendor-neutral, cloud-based, electronic medical information exchange service to make images and reports available via the EMR or email to hospitals, physicians and patients, which has eliminated film and paper and makes results immediately available to referring physicians. Results are frequently available to physicians before patients leave the imaging center.

Imaging Healthcare Specialists Awarded ACR Accreditation in Mammography

IHS has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology. The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer review evaluation of the practice by board-certified physicians and physicists who are experts in the field. IHS currently offers digital mammography at four locations and will be expanding this service to additional locations in the coming weeks.
